What is a Musculoskeletal physiotherapist?

A Musculo-skeletal Physiotherapist or previously a manipulative physiotherapist is a physiotherapist who has successfully completed postgraduate study in manipulative therapy and is a member of the Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy Association of Australia (MPAA). The post-graduate diploma course involves both practical and theoretical components. The practical includes training in manual therapy skills including manipulation. The course involves more detailed study of anatomy, neuro-physiology and pathology pertinent to the musculo-skeletal system and the completion of a research project.

Less than 5% of practicing physiotherapists are Manipulative Physiotherapists. A Manipulative Physiotherapist has specialised knowledge and practical expertise in the examination and treatment of patients with spinal limb pain and dysfunction.
